Epp Jääger

Hometown: Singapore

Based in: Singapore

Epp Jääger is an international artist and architect, currently residing in South East Asia. She was born in Estonia and studied art and architecture in Sweden. Having worked a number of years as an architect in Scandinavia, she has been influenced predominantly by minimalistic style, involving clean forms and neutral colours.

In 2013 an adventure took her to South East Asia, where she discovered a world very different from her own – a world full of vibrant colours, rich of ornaments and fabulous artefacts. She immediately recognised her true calling – visualising and sharing her personal experience of the exotic people and places around the world in vivid colours and decorative patterns.

As she travelled around the region, she became fascinated with people and their way of living and working. During her travels she observed the locals, their outfits, clothing, facial decorations; also ornaments, patterns in fabrics, artefacts and architecture. This became the base and inspiration for her paintings.

Her work is about perceiving and documenting everyday lives of the native people and transfiguring her imagination into subjective narrative by using vivid colours and rich decoration. Her paintings are an expression of admiration for humanity – willingness to express joy and happiness despite the hardships of everyday life. Working in acrylic paints, she employs bold colour pallet and decorative mark making to give her paintings glorified and naïve sense of reality.

While travelling she observes people and places via camera lens and a sketch book, and transforms this experience into her subjective expression of reality. She is currently working on her Myanmar series. However she is constantly seeking to be exposed to new exotic people and places across the world.
