Evgenia Makarova (b.1984) is an Aylesbury, United Kingdom- based interdisciplinary
artist. She holds a degree in Graphic Design and has studied sculpture, painting, art
history, and photography. Painting, sculpture, video art and sound are combined in her
artistic method. Co-founder of Pink Foam art group.
'In my painting practice, I adhere to the principle of spontaneity, working with abstraction
predominantly using acrylic and oil on canvas. I avoid deliberate forms and movements,
focusing instead on the rapidity of execution, which transforms the creative act into
an experiment. This approach frees me from complete control over the process and its
outcome, inviting an emotional response rather than a specific interpretation.
Beginning with a subtle, almost imperceptible feeling, I allow color to take on a central
role throughout my artistic process. Here, color transcends its conventional function as a
medium; it becomes the protagonist, imbuing each hue with narrative and emotion. By
combining the abstract sensation with the concrete form of color spots, I synthesize the
dichotomies of chance and deliberation, precision and playfulness.'
What inspires you?
Perhaps every artist has a certain set of "tools" that helps an artist to immerse into "working" state or find inspiration. In my case, the best assistant is music that, with its atmosphere, will perfectly coincide with the theme of the work I am working on.
Describe your creative process.
The creative process of EM is based on intuition, immediacy and improvisation. She always tries to improvise in the choice of materials and tools. This is the basis for entering the intuitive process in which an idea is born. The color and texture of the material reveals the emotional component of the piece. When a work is devoid of any form, then the material itself becomes the main character. The speed of execution for me is an important component of my process, turning it into an experimental space.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Improvisation, subconscious and serendipity.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
To be honest I would not say that I was inspired by any particular artist. Definitely a lot of artists create interesting works that could inspire me. Mostly I am inspired by the work process itself and the materials.
