More About Gela Mikava

Question IconWhat inspires you?

The God

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

My creative process starts with a deep emotional or intellectual trigger, often inspired by personal experiences or historical themes like displacement. I begin with raw, instinctive pencil sketches that represent my inner chaos. These lines flow freely, capturing unfiltered emotion. I then layer classical painting techniques, blending realism and abstraction to create tension between control and spontaneity. I allow the materials to influence the direction of the work, embracing unexpected outcomes. For me, the process is a balance of intuition and purpose, resulting in art that connects personal reflections with universal themes, encouraging viewers to explore their own emotions.

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Raw, emotional, transformative.

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

Several artists have influenced my work, both in technique and theme. Egon Schiele’s raw, expressive lines and distorted figures inspire my exploration of human emotion and vulnerability. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s chaotic yet meaningful abstractions resonate with my approach to blending raw instinct with conceptual depth. Additionally, the works of Francisco Goya, especially his *Black Paintings*, influence my exploration of dark themes like conflict and existential struggle. I also draw inspiration from contemporary artists like Daisy Parris, whose figurative yet abstract style aligns with my interest in bridging emotion and form in unpredictable ways.

Question IconWhat is the most important tool when creating your work?

The most important tool is my intuition, guiding the flow of raw emotion and creative expression.

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to embrace the chaos and trust the process. Art isn’t about perfection but about honesty and raw expression. As an artist, it’s important to allow yourself to explore freely without fear of mistakes—each mark, every layer, reveals something deeper within.

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

I find inspiration in the world around me—nature, personal history, and stories of resilience. The landscapes of Georgia, my family’s history of displacement, and the emotional complexity of human relationships all fuel my work. I also draw from literature, particularly works that explore the human condition and inner conflict.
