Gilbert Hsiao is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He studied art history, music, and perceptual psychology at Columbia University and received a BFA from Pratt Institute. As a painter for over thirty-five years, he is interested in translating the experience of music into visual abstractions that convey a sense of time, space, and movement.
Hsiao has shown extensively nationally and internationally at galleries in New York, Europe, Australia, South America, and Asia, and at institutions such as the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, PS 1, and Mass MOCA. He has been awarded residencies at Art Omni (2014), the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program (2012-13), the Millay Colony (2014), and Gallery Afrerro (2014). In 2008 Hsiao was the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship.
