Born in the Island of Cebu, on the southern parts of the Philippines, Janine Barrera Castillo started her formal art education by studying at the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts, where she then finished a BFA degree. She was a constant first place winner while at University in several art competitions, most notably the Jose Joya Annual Fine Art Awards. After two solo shows and multiple group shows in the Philippines, she competed and won in a Study for the United States Full Scholarship Competition sponsored by the Starr Foundation of New York. She then used the scholarship award to pursue an MFA degree at the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. Janine Castillo have since then shown in several solo and group exhibits in various places. Her studio is located in the North Bay where she can be found most days of the week toiling away.
