Ju Aijun
Born: 1971
Hometown: Tieling
Based in: Shenyang
Yu Aijun's creative ideas come from a wide range of sources. They become his “art works” after going through a secret channel or an opportunity. Yu is not an image artist or schemaist. He has a strong sense of distrust in the art of styling or imaging. For him personally, art is a provocation or an attack. He solves issues of will power and anxiety with painting or other creative behavior. Yu hopes to increase category of expression. He does not simply export concept, but he loves to sniff the fireworks on this battlefield.
In Yu Aijun’s view, the reading of traditional painting or single-piece painting is static, stylized, closed and nostalgic, and even has an outdated, boring, elitist tendency, because viewers have to find the artist's clues, prove the experience and expect the “unexpected” in a perfect imaging structure. Yu's view and method is to use static painting to enter a "time device". The constantly expanding world is like a huge multidimensional device of future. So the use of free canvas conveys Yu’s understanding of freedom, democracy and expansion.
Yu Aijun's work methods bare characteristics of reading and writing of diary or poetry. He often visualises the visible material first, accumulates them, then "re-creates" after a period of time. The visual "material" of diary or poetic temperament may turn different directions due to work needs. Yu Aijun is utterly fascinated by them.
Yu Aijun hopes that his work is only part of the pyramid structure, or that they are only a kind of prompt, just a visual link or sample. Yu never wants to be a painter. Increasingly he is willing to become a director in a broad sense of setting script writing, script painting, drama and a variety of actors in one. If necessary, Yu will "use” painting or the mix of figuration and abstraction, graphic and painting, together with text reading, physical installation to explore and question the importance and effectiveness of style, variety, media and even language in an artist’s self-realisatio
