Kuninori Usami

Born: 1929

Hometown: Japan

Based in: Japan

Born in 1929, Kuninori Usami’s artworks have only been discovered recently since his passing in early 2014. A mysterious artist with not much story to his name, Kuninori had his pieces showcased at an exhibition entitled ‘Avant-Garde Japan II’, where works were similarly chosen based on the post-war era in which they were completed in.

Kuninori worked at the Ministry of Agriculture in Japan and secretly kept his artworks in his studio for approximately 60 years. One can only assume that his newly-found works were done as a direct impact, commentary, and result of World War II. Above all, they are undeniably a special treasure open to interpretation for any viewer.
