Currently living and working in Sydney, Australia.
Kyle Hoffmann is an artist working primarily with analogue photographic processes. His work is inspired by the natural world and fundamental hidden phenomena that shape our human experience. Fascinated by these mechanisms, the movements of deep time, and how they influence our perceived reality. Which is then transformed by different cultural contexts and shaped by the viewer’s personal history and experience.
Hoffmann’s work has been exhibited in Australia, United States, Bali, and the UK. His work has been collected by the National Archives in Washington DC and is held in both corporate and private collections.
Producing Platinum Palladium Prints and Fine Art Archival Pigment Prints.
What inspires you?
The natural world and fundamental hidden phenomena that shapes our human experience. I am constantly fascinated by these mechanisms, the movements of long expanses of time and how these shape and influence our perceived reality.
Describe your creative process.
I start with an idea that I want to communicate, then research that concept to the point of photographing. I use film because I like the object making and physical process. A collection can take years to put together from date of conception to actualising in a series of images.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Hiroshi Sugimoto, Michael Kenna, George Byrne, Franco Fontana, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alfred Stieglitz, Irving Penn, Bill Brant, Georgia O'Keefe, Sally Mann, Daniel Arsham
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
The most important tool would be the intent of the work.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Do the work, you can think all day about it but you can't forget about action! Do the work, work hard, be obsessed and do it.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Inspiration comes from everywhere I do, it's the constant flow of experience. Some times it just kind of just materialised out of nowhere and behold there it is! Other times it's much harder and I need to revisit it many times until it makes sense. I spend a lot of time researching other artists, seeing what is happening and where things are going.
