My name is Laurens Mostert. (1981 The Hague, The Netherlands).
I studied Architectural Engineering in my place of birth for a few years.
After that I studied Graphic Design at the KABK.
I came to realise that Dutch ZERO had to be my artistic starting point.
Late 2015 I made my first relief.
I tried to develop a more distinct signature from the start.
Since early 2020 that has resulted in the series LUMINA.
The creative process is both intuitive as analytical.
Concentration and control are connected to my work.
My aspiration is to render the great in a subtle way.
And I want the pieces to be timeless.
All art is concentrated.
What inspires you?
My inspiration can come from lots of things. Very small things: how a light is cast on a tiny object or the movement of raindrops on a window. But also the comprehensiveness of nature, the law of conservation of energy for instance and the fact that zero&infinity are everywhere AND nowhere!
Describe your creative process.
This series is called lumina, that's Latin for lights or cavities. It evolved from my take on the Dutch fraction of the ZERO movement. First a grid is applied on a panel, painted matt black. The grid (cavities) is then filled under a magnifying glass. I use a dip pen, with gold-inks (lights) I developed. Then a process of destruction/creation takes place untill it's done.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Minimalistic, subtle and concentrated.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, Reinoud Oudshoorn.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
Patience and a dip pen.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Be subtle.
Where do you go for inspiration?
For a walk. Anywhere in nature or urban areas.
