Over the last decades, Marek—a photographer for more than 40 years—has shifted his photographic technique from manual analog B&W to digital color photography. With his wife, Magda, they have established a unique visual vocabulary by designing abstract artifacts in the last few years. Today, the duo creates and acts together as Boguszak, exhibiting and selling award-winning photography worldwide.
The pair created a unique photography body of work from their journeys in Death Valley and Abu Dhabi deserts. The Boguszak's sophisticated image processing images highlights colorful shapes and pure lines with breathtaking harmony.
Boguszak have presented solo exhibitions at international venues in Zurich (CH), Bern (CH), Campione (IT), London (UK), and Prague (CZ) and many group exhibitions across Europe and the USA. They are the recipient of many awards including 20th and 19th Pollux Awards (2023), RPS IPE shortlist (2023), TIFA (2022, 2021, 2020), APA (2022, 2021, 2020), IPA (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020), Px3 (2022, 2021, 2020), ND Awards (2022, 2021), FAPA (2022, 2021, 2020), NYC4PA (2023, 2021), BIFA (2022, 2021), Art Gemini Prize shortlist (2022, 2021).
I took digital landscape photographs all around the world and a lucky chance brought me to the sand dunes. Countless variations of their harmonious curves and shapes reminded me of the cleanliness of Newton’s laws of motion. Geometrical patterns of sand dunes in vast areas, undisturbed by human activity or even by living nature, create an unusual environment for a play of light.
What inspires you?
Ever changing play of lights and shadows evoking my dreams and emotions.
Describe your creative process.
Unlike in my previous works, when I take a photograph today, I do not know what will emerge at the end of my work on it. The process of analyzing digital matrix from camera is quite close to a search for photographic equivalents in which recorded lines and structures emerge in a new composition. This new work evokes fresh associations and meanings, which in turn stimulate emotions freed from the original recorded object.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Harmony, dreams, fantasy.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Josef Sudek, Alfred Stieglitz, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
My curiosity, love in experimenting and my soul.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Everything is possible, just think, try and do it.
Where do you go for inspiration?
My wife, desert and music.
