Greek painter Maria Bacha paints colourful, nebulous, abstract compositions inspired by nature and light. Working in an organic, gestural style, she allows the materials to guide her as the paintings develop. She employs a unique method of blending acrylic paint, pigments and resin to create a dynamic interplay between the layers. Transparent colour fields pull the eye into the illusionary space and then seem to give way to ghostly, textured forms.
Like celestial clouds or pools in the primordial soup, her compositions appear to always be in the process of becoming.
Bacha has exhibited extensively in Greece, as well as in Europe and in the United States, and her work is in multiple public and private collections.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts from the University of La Verne, California. She lives and works in Marousi, Athens.

What inspires you?
Nature, light and colour, especially blue. Also, during the creative process, I am inspired by experimentation with the materials, organic forms, textures, fluidity, movement, and tranquillity and balance.
Describe your creative process.
I follow the potentials of the materials, in a free, gestural process. I see one point and the whole, almost at the same time, again and again. I release and I hold, add and erase, again and again. I let my instinct and emotion flow, observing carefully how the elements of art communicate with each other; I form a composition that satisfies my aesthetic, emotional, and spiritual pursuits. I usually use acrylic combined with pigments. I work layer after layer, creating transparencies, revealing the best textures and design elements; I bring into being a unique and mysterious atmosphere, in a dynamic and passionate manner, full of energy, close to abstract expressionism, organic abstraction and sometimes minimalism.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Intuitive, Experimental, Uplifting
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Pollock, Rothko, Tapies, Cy Twombly, Kessanlis and Spyropoulos
Where do you go for inspiration?
To my inner self through meditation, to play with my pets, to nature (forest, sea, or sky).
