Michael Simms

Hometown: Sydney

Based in: Sydney

Micheal Simms is an award winning painter based in Sydney. Having completed degrees in both psychology and film at Flinders University before winning a scholarship to study art at the Julian Ashton Art School Michael's practice brings together his interest in classical art and contemporary human behaviour to reveal hidden truths about his subjects. His depictions of the human figure pay homage to academic conventions within fine art (the reclining nude/the society portrait) while also reinterpreting them in the context of modern life.

His most recent works draw on the benefits and challenges of the digital revolution, and the resulting unprecedented assortment of social issues that arise from the temptation to seek personal validation (whether it be social, sexual, emotional or economic) via online platforms. Simm's figures are captured in various poses, transfixed by their devices, or overwhelmed by anxiety, social isolation, obsession or addiction – all themes that feel pertinent in the current digital climate. Combining his background in psychology, sociology and film with his classical art training Simms’ images contributes to a broader discussion around digital media and identity.
