Mikito Ozeki

Mikito Ozeki (b. 1976) lives and works in Nagoya, Japan. He has had solo exhibitions at Ikkan Art Gallery, Singapore, Clear Edition & Gallery, Tokyo, Japan and LeBasse Projects Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, USA, and recently participated in the group exhibition “Neo Folk” (2014) at Ikkan Art Gallery, Singapore.

Building upon the act of “cutting,” Ozeki’s technique of small, minute cuts amass into large, engulfing stretches, uncovering the ever­‐expansive mental space of the artist’s mind, from the figurative and representative works of the series “BODY” (2005‐2007) and “ROAD” (2007) to his latest abstract works that cumulate into fields of noise.

Ozeki layers new works with small undulations, like the noise of a dark, black TV screen. The repeated movements and subtly varying strata are mental states, serving as a window into Ozeki’s inner world.

In television, noise is often considered random, useless data not being used to transmit a signal, a by-­‐product of other activities, which is not unlike feelings and thoughts that are left in the sidelines of our everyday existence to make way for other more important tasks. Ozeki laboriously records every transmission and signal, imparting an exalted feat of small noises that advance towards viewers and stimulate our senses.
