Renata Dutrée's artworks portray humanity in a way that gives space to expressing a hidden life that lies beneath the surface, allowing it to flourish and legitimizing its place in the open.
Personal stories and emotions of her models are combined with the artist’s own experiences, resulting in series with strong personal signatures. The timeless, elegant, evocative works of art, with their distinct styling and warm tones, have been recognized internationally with numerous awards in acclaimed photography competitions.
Living and working in Voorschoten, former dermatologist Renata Dutrée is a Dutch Fine Art photographer who graduated from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam in December 2019.
She creates classical Fine Art portraits and still-life imagery by combining use of light with references to symbolism, religion, art, and history. Her work is inspired by the great painters and sculptors of old, especially those from the classical period, the Renaissance, and the Dutch Golden Age, such as Rembrandt, Raphael, and Caravaggio.
Through her staged portraits and still-life imagery, she draws attention to the aftermath of challenges we face in our lives, allowing personal stories to be translated to more universal ones and revealing deeper truths about the society we live in and how we perceive the world around us. Her work highlights things unrevealed, that stir underneath the surface of our own self and that of people around us, thus giving the viewer a glimpse of the darkness within all of us and the challenges we all face. In this way, her work evokes feelings of longing, escape, and might-have-beens.
Renata Dutrée frequently exhibits both in The Netherlands and internationally, with many of her artworks becoming part of private art collections.
What inspires you?
Stories of other people I come across, in articles and on social media. Their experiences often trigger my compassion and empathy for them. These stories seem to plant little seeds in my subconsciousness. Usually after some time, they kind of pop up and I think of a way to explore these in my photography.
Describe your creative process.
It starts with a person or an idea I want to tell a story about. I start creating a moodboard with the style I want to shoot, what kind of lighting, backdrop, additional props if needed. I look for designers to get specific clothing I want to portray the sitter in. At the shoot the MUAH and stylist help me to get the vision I had in my head turn into a reality.
