Sarah Rutledge is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist from Ontario, Canada and resides just outside of Toronto. Although Sarah always dabbled in the creative arts, it wasn’t until 2018 that she invested all her energy and passion into abstract painting. An intuitive and contemplative thinker, Sarah always discerned her immense capacity to express herself through painting and that intuitive nature is expressed through her free flowing works.
Sarah believes that abstract art serves a larger purpose for the wellbeing of individuals and society. Through viewing abstract forms the viewer is encouraged to grasp the painting first with their emotions.
The goal of Rutledge’s work is to create an experience for the viewer to connect with a deeper part of themselves; to remember who they are and who they want to become.
What inspires you?
Im inspired by the endless possibilities in creating different abstract forms. I approach the canvas with awe and wonder each time, as anything can happen during the creative process.
Describe your creative process.
I usually begin with a colour palette in mind and the piece evolves from there. I don't like to be too directive with my work, to allow for the unexpected surprises that make the best paintings.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
I tend to use non-traditional artist tools such as sponges and squeegees.
