Serena Barbieri, 1987. Artist and researcher from Florence, living and working in Oporto since 2015.
Currently, a PhD student in the PhD program in Contemporary Art at the College of Arts of the University of Coimbra, her university carrier began with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Florence, followed by two years of Degree in Fashion Design and Multimedia Arts, the curriculum in Arts and Multimedia, at IUAV University of Venice, and the Master’s Degree in Contemporary Artistic Practices at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.
Since 2017 she is responsible for the project Atelier SantoIsidro, atelier and exhibition space part of the independent artistic circuit of the city of Oporto (Portugal).
The artistic research, practice and production are related to the knowledge learned during the scientific studies, as well as the experiences and the many stimuli received during the years of artistic studies.
Since the beginning, in my practical work it has been explored above all the archiving, classifying and categorizing dimension of natural and artificial objects, often collected in wanderings by urban or by the natural environment and presented through installations.
In painting and drawing the lines, the figures and the shapes are chosen as absolute and exact, because they represent the most immediate medium to communicate with the others. The invoked images are good, recalling order and not chaos, recalling stability, life and not death; and this is the content of the constructions.
What inspires you?
My sources of inspiration come from two different places. The first is identified with everything that surrounds me in the present moment like the geometric shapes of the buildings or the textures in the streets. The second place is inside me and in my memories, especially connected to the Italian cities where I lived and their atmospheres.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Composition, geometry and architecture
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
I have three tools that I can't do without. The compass, the ruler and the pencil.
Where do you go for inspiration?
In libraries and in all kinds of museums. Also travelling and visiting cities or countries where there are different textures and materialities.
