Seungjoo Kim
Born: 1974
Hometown: South Korea
Based in: Daegu, South Korea
Seungjoo Kim was born in 1974 in South Korea. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts Painting from Yeungnam University in Daegu, Korea, her MFA in Digital Arts from the Pratt Institute in New York in 2009, and her MFA in Fine Arts Painting from Yeungnam University in Daegu, Korea in 2002.
Seungjoo Kim has been working with the motif of the ruler measuring physical and mental world with the number from 0 to 9. The ruler as a measurement tool in diverse mediums becomes an odd object that can change our awareness of the ruler. The first impression of her work is minimalistic but it is the symbolism of a ruler as a criterion of human society. Her work dose not use any modified, damaged original images of ruler, composed only with gradations and figures from zero to nine. Inspired by nameplates engraved with mother of pearl, the artist takes this material as the reflection of one's position and identity with characters and signs coinciding with the concept of rulers.
Kim has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout Korea in New York, and participated in group exhibitions in New York, Singapore and numerous cities in Korea. In 2002, she won the HaJungWoong Award for Young Artists. Her works are in public collections, such as Gangnam Station IPark, Seoul, Daegu World Cup Stadium, Daegu, Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, and Ilshin Spinning, Seoul.
