Born: 1972
Hometown: Neuss am Rhein, Germany
Based in: Canberra, Australia
Stefanie Schulte (1972) is a German artist who studied Visual Arts in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain and is now based in Canberra, Australia.
She holds a PhD in Visual Arts, which was unanimously awarded the distinction “summa cum laude”.
Her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and Australia.
The most recent solo shows took place in Canberra, Australia, at the German Embassy (2017, "Architektur der Fläche”), The Grainger Gallery (2021, "Orange Wasn't Invited to the Party”) and in the ANCA Gallery (2022, Vivaldi’s Seasons).
Art Guide Australia published an article by Andrew Stephens in the May/June 2022 print edition on her exhibition at the ANCA Gallery.
She received an Art Residency in Stockholm, Sweden, (2020, Art Circle Residence— Europe Connect), which she could not attend in person due to Covid travel restrictions. But her paintings travelled to the group show at the German Residence in Stockholm and were also included in a retrospective of all the past recipients of the Kunstförderpreis award in her home town Neuss (2021), an award she had received in 2000 after graduating from art school. In the same year she had received the first prize of the Art Awards in Ayllon, Spain.
Most recently one of her paintings has been selected as a finalist for the 60th Fisher’s Ghost Art Award in Campbelltown Arts Centre, Sydney, Australia, 2022.
Her paintings are constructions in two dimensions. They are built up by many layers of colour that can be perceived at the edges of a colour field or simply through the depth of a shade. She both explores the interactions between different shades of colour and also the partition of the two dimensional space by shifting and moving the fields of colour like tectonic plates until the final piece of the puzzle is found.
All brush strokes are placed “free hand” to create a warmer and more organic feeling than the “hard-edge” of geometric abstraction.

More About Stefanie Schulte
What inspires you?
The beautiful Australian sunlight: the unbelievably intense blue colour of the Australian sky and the golden light in the late afternoon.
Describe your creative process.
My paintings are slowly built up by many layers of colour. The works “grow” in parallel to each other. When I managed to mix just the right shade of colour, something clicks in my mind and intuition tells me where to place brushstrokes with that particular colour. My works are finished when a brushstroke reveals to have been the missing puzzle piece to lock in that balance between the simplicity of a clear visual message and the complexity that keeps the viewer intrigued.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Geometric Abstraction, Analysis of Colour, Mathematic Partition of the Canvas
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Albert Irvin, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
The containers in which I mix and store different shades of colour and of course the perfect brush!
