Thien was born in Vietnam, Bien Hoa Dong Nai, northeast of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). His family came to the United States in 1992 when he was about 3 years old. Thien believes that growing up in a culturally diverse neighborhood helped him keep an open mind on how to live our daily lives as well as important factors/issues. He believes that has a big influence on how he creates his own artwork.
He finished his professional schooling at the University of California, Irvine. The four years there polished and affirmed his path through daily discussions with other artists and practicing and creating shows. He finished his BA of Fine Arts in 2007 now he does custom framing and continues to paint.
Thien specializes in abstract landscapes that utilizes textures, colors, and unique compositions.
What inspires you?
The beauty and stillness of nature. The changing abstract landscapes of Earth.
Describe your creative process.
Slow.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Humble, simple, unique.
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
There is not one artist, and too many to name. Most of them are photographers because I love landscapes and their job allows me to view places I have yet to visit.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
My mind and my hands.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
My father always told me to slow down, I tend to remind myself of that often.
Where do you go for inspiration?
A lot of times being inspired to create artwork is a mindset, clearing clutter around me is key for me to let loose. Sometimes I need to push through a mental blockade to be inspired, and other times looking outward will encourage confidence to move forward.
