Artist statement
A painting created in response to the Francis Bacon painting: 'Study for Self Portrait' (1963) - this image is part of a trio of paintings made by Myers for the group show 'Made from the museum' at Cardiff MADE gallery in 2015. The aim was to connect directly with and create a physical response to an artwork or artifact from the Cardiff Museum Art collection.
'Nebulous' is the largest of the 3 images created in response to Bacon's painting. The creative process was highly physical involving lots of movement around the image determined by its size. The surfaces show the physicalities and forces involved in applying the paint, perhaps reminiscent of Bacon's approaches to paint application. The overall form of the painting relates to a figure inspired by Myers' study of human figures through life drawing.
