Artist statement
This series was created when we started doing some fuel reduction on our property coming up to fire season. The leaves were disintegrating as they floated through the air and I could barely capture them before they became ash. It got me thinking about fire, about our current understanding of fire, or perhaps our misunderstanding of fire. All the rich, thorough and intimate knowledge Indigenous culture holds for the land, that we as a country have not respected or sought. So much loss. This single leaf for me speaks of the loss and disintegration of cultural respect, but also of hope and resilience, hope that we might be able to learn to rise out of the ashes of our mistakes and look at nature in a new way.
