Lingering echoes - 2 (Diptych)

I find inspiration in observing the passage of time through the marks nature leaves on surfaces…in the erosion, decay, and rust that add a patina to our landscapes. Transience and interconnection of the natural phenomena are at the core of my art practice.

In this work, I have looked towards the urban environment, particularly concrete, asphalt and stone. These materials connote strength, power and longevity, but even they ultimately erode, and the cracks, marks and imprints left behind speak evocatively of the unstoppable passage of time. Just like natural processes, my work is created by repeatedly adding, and then stripping away, layer upon layer of paint, wax, bitumen, graphite, memories and emotions. And just like natural surfaces, each layer is undeniably altered by the interaction with the next one.

The work, monochromatic at first glance, reveals subtle shifts in topography, tones and textures upon closer inspection. Just like nature itself, a quieter contemplation reveals more depth and meaning.
