Dark Night

In Making Waves, Chino Yulo pays homage to Cebu, its beaches, and its surrounding waters, retracing through a series sculptural works and wall bound art pieces his long and abiding affection for the seas and the vibrant life and mysteries they hold. The exhibition harkens back to the beginnings of Yulo’s artistic journey, where his enchantment with the sea—marahuyo— begets the enchantment of his art. For Yulo, his art is not merely inspired by the waters of the sea but is born out of the very energy and life force that directs its currents. Ranging from wall-bound thermoformed acrylic sculptures, tabletop works, copper etchings, and immersive installations, Yulo’s past works tease out concepts of islands and archipelagos, water currents and vast horizons, ocean depths, rain, and the underwater world. His artistic vision, hewn out of the awe-inspiring natural power and beauty of the sea, evokes a sense of the sublime—something vast and overwhelming, beyond human control. In many ways, Yulo takes on the spirit of the ancient seafaring Bisaya as they waded through shallow seas into the deep oceans, their hearts longing for adventure, emboldened by their determination to reach distant lands.
