Artist statement
Sunrises where I live are often foggy in the summer. It’s as if the day begins in black and white. There is a brief magical moment when the sun begins to glow through just before the fog starts to melt away. The butter yellow I chose for the sky here is that glowing moment.
The cool gray of the palm silhouettes is from unearthly skies when wildfire smoke settled here making everything look like a tinted black and white photo. The sky was a yellow-orange that day. Together the pale yellow and pale gray tones form a hushed moment of light suspended in heavy air. This is a quiet painting.
The 1.5 inch deep gallery canvas sides are left a clean bright white. There is a hanging wire in the back making it ready to hang immediately.
