Artist statement
These are the woods near my house in northern California where I walk. They are a great comfort to me. The changing light and weather transform them so that every hour and every day is like seeing a new painting.
This is a hand-printed contact photograph of morning light glowing through the foggy air between eucalyptus trees. It was made using the 19th century cyanotype photographic process.
The paper is a heavy acid-free watercolor paper. Slight variations of shades of blue exist from edition to edition as each print was hand-painted with photo chemicals in the dark and printed in natural sunlight with variations in the weather and intensity of light causing some prints to be darker than others.
Any fine white lines are not scratches but are due to tiny gaps between the bristles of the paintbrush when the photo emulsion was brushed on in darkness.
There are only 5 hand-printed copies made from this negative. Signed on the back by the artist.
