Artist statement
Tong is known for his use of the unconventional medium of custom-made stickers, inspired by the ubiquitous “Made In Hong Kong” stickers that he came across during his childhood in the 1970-80s as his family was in the garment business at that time.
Since the beginning, Tong’s works has been and continues to be wildly relevant to the evolving issues related to social, cultural and values in Hong Kong and the world. The fun and witty paradoxes that he creates through the manipulation of texts, subtexts, graphics and colours, contain powerful underlying messages and perspectives.
The focus on repetition and the mundane, anonymity, and cryptic characteristic of Tong’s works continues to be prevalent in the MUMBLE CRUMBLE works, in which the meanings and idea behind “word”, “speech” and “message” get lost in the noise of society and hidden agendas in the world today. The work encourages a different way of “seeing” to better understand the world around us.
