Artist statement
Inspired by the artist's visit to Arizona, the painting is composed vertically in an attempt to portray Arizona's dry, almost empty landscapes. The canvas resembles a detail cut from a desert by removing any obvious reference and reducing the composition to an abstract stratification of ochre, orange, and black paint. The vertical format gives the piece monumentality and invites the viewer to contemplate in front of earth layers that, though invisible to the eye, are grounding existence on Earth.
