About the art
Artist statement
While rather ambivalent about current mainstream politics I'm deeply interested in all radical forms of expression, and the various protest movements of the present form another point of departure. Taking its title from the powerful Yeats' stanza, "A Terrible Beauty" is a nod to the Gezi protests that rocked Istanbul in 2013. Instead of the typical revolutionary ideal of one principle, one goal, Gezi movement was a spontaneous, multidimensional event which pierced through all the societal strata and united people against the hallucination for an authoritarian order. The collective trance in which minds disengaged from the pressure of proto-fascist "will to power" unfolded creative energy and a plethora of powerful symbols. Just as the Easter Rising which Yeats referred to, Gezi did not accomplish its aspirations, yet left deep traces worth to be recognised. Being a first-hand witness to the developments I felt compelled to leave a visual trace, albeit without any specific spatial resemblance.
