About the Collection: Bas Relief / Basso Relievo / "Low Relief" is a type of sculpture that emerges from a flat plane. Here I use thick watercolor paper or washi, and an array of scalpels to carve into the paper. I rarely plan in detail what I will sculpt and prefer to start and flow. Each piece is unique and takes multiple hours to complete. I like to offset the rhythmic and repetitive patterns with a little chaos, opting for a dynamic and occasionally irregular composition, as if to convey the petals on paper breaking free from the substrate that binds them.
