Artist statement
Found materials – hand embroidered napkins, tablecloths, dowry linens, curtains doilies, polar fleece, polyester curtain, cushion fill, thread, wool batting, silk and cotton thread.
Made entirely from waste materials Trousseau honors the craft traditions that have come before me. It integrates and pays homage to my personal craft inheritance (traditionally referred to as ‘women’s work’) embroidery, applique, quilting, crochet, cross-stitch and lacework. Through the transformative attention of my own hand, thread and needle I elevate the cast-off examples of once treasured handiwork.
A quilt pieced together from waste textiles that through their nature are embedded with latent personal, historical and environmental meanings.
Trousseau questions our relationship to the past and the value we place upon materials resources and labour.
I place a high value on waste materials and use them to explore themes of environment, domestic life, feminism and social context.
The Trousseau series of works are my ode to these craft traditions.
This is a textile work that may be hung like a wall hanging or professionally framed.
