About the art
Artist statement
In my paintings, specially the series Chromo-Clouds, I bring direct references of the two cultures related to my origins:
- The Japanese culture through silver and gold colors, also the compositional elements of waves and clouds, featured in the Japanese Traditional Painting yamato-e.
- The Brazilian culture through the poetics of my mother tongue, Portuguese, by the poem of Fernando Pessoa (Lisbon, 1888 - 1935):
Like clouds in the sky
The dreams pass throughout me.
None of the dreams are mine
Although I dream like this…
I transcribe this poem repeatedly and intricately with a permanent acrylic marker along the fullest extent of the canvas. The poems can only be read when we get closer to the work, because at a certain distance we can only perceive colors and textures.
The compositional part in silver, sometimes resembles waves, sometimes clouds, also refers to the contour lines of imaginary topographic maps. The lines are embossed layers made of acrylic paste and are modelled, carved and polished by hand, giving to the painting a definition that I call sculptural-painting process.
The organic forms featured inside the compositions are like plant structures or something related to cnidarians: multicellular marine species, with their soft and fluorescent colors. They are like organ-poetic species: anemone-maps, chromo-corals, Portuguese man o 'war-poems, etc... They transform, adapt and modify themselves according to the movement of the observer's look and incidence of the light.
The numerous layers and references of Chromo-Clouds represent two universes that form a third space: a place / a map / a home that exists only in-between: in the duality between appearance and essence, and in the ambivalence that permeates the origins of those who live in hybrid and migratory environments
