Artist statement
This sculpture was made for the SEKIMORI ISHI MODERN exhibition. In the period from September 2013 to September 2015, this international traveling exhibition was shown at 5 locations in the Netherlands and France.
Sekimori ishi: (literally: stacked stone; figuratively: boundary stone; stop stone.) Is an old 16th century Japanese custom.
For "Sekimori Ishi Modern" I started from the stone as a modest marking, yet clearly present. The sculpture fits into a natural environment. It's not about the big gesture, but about the details: for example the way of connecting, the interplay of volumes, the balancing of forms or the inner space through which light falls.
The sculpture is made out of granite and limestone, connected by a rope. It's suitable for the outside.
