This work is a part of the artist’s Abandon series conceived during the spring of 2020 while in lockdown in Belgrade. During this time, Genevieve observed that the wildflowers and grasses were left untamed in the city, as human activity slowed to a halt. This brought a little wildness and wilderness into the urban areas.

Flights of Fancy is a painting inspired by the movement of butterflies and birds and our own need to make space to daydream. A recurring theme in the artist’s work is imagination and creativity. Genevieve Leavold believes in the power of art to ignite and inspire a deeper connection to our imaginative spirit.
Painted in Genevieve’s signature style of layering transparent glazes, the brushwork is loose and spontaneous. Each layer covers the surface of the piece and is painted while the others are still wet. The final forms, that convey the energy of a full-fledged daydream and the delicate beauty of the forms of butterfly wings.
The subtle use of aqua and green contrast with the luminous oranges and the artist's technique of layering colour gives the piece depth and resonance. The work is a celebration of imagination and nature.
This piece can be hung unframed, but if you’d like to have it framed I recommend a simple oak tray frame.
