About the art
Artist statement
Tiniente Rey 6 of 10, is from a Series of Photographs taken in Havana Cuba in 2016.
When she is traveling and away from her painting studio, Parr uses a camera as her way of ‘painting’ whilst on the move, Often mistaken as reproductions of her paintings, her photographs are Original Limited Edition pieces.
Signed, numbered Limited Edition of 10 Digital Photograph printed on 310gsm Hahnemuhele German Etching paper using archival ink. Image size 79.1 x 52.7 cm
Gina Parr photographs series of transient forms and marks on walls and surfaces, which form unique atmospheric worlds, each with their own pictorial resonance or echo. Many are redolent of things half remembered, some resemble fragments of old charts and maps, others feature overt elements of graphic representation. Her intent is to frame these forms and subsequently print them exactly as found: the shapes, colour, and textures, all discovered in the weathering, decay, water damage and patination of her chosen destination.
Both her painting and photography uncover our complex potential connections and disconnections with form and landscape; the fine line between pure abstraction and figurative recognition. She has found a symbiosis between her photography and her painting, resulting in work that she hopes will provoke our capacity to imagine a space beyond our known territories.
