Philippine Snakes and Ladders
During her stay in India, Guinevere Decena learned that Snakes and Ladders originated there. Designed to teach good values to children despite life’s random challenges and windows of grace, the original board is swamped with snakes, with only a few ladders in it. Unlike modern S&L boards where the number of Snakes is more proportional to the Ladders.
“I wanted to make a board that features bamboo ladders commonly used in the daily functions of my region (Visayas, Philippines) and the variety of snake species in my country including the longest venomous snake in the world - the Philippine King Cobra and one of the smallest snake species - the Brahminy Blind Snake,” says Guinevere
“I think it is essential to continuously try to understand who we are. Not just according to who our parents are, but what our nation was. In this board game, through play, I wish to cultivate a sense of curiosity about the environment, social psychology, and personal encounters of modern Filipinos with their true roots.
