About the art
Artist statement
Oreum is a small volcanic cone in the Jeju Island in South Korea. The word 'Oreum' is the Jeju dialect which means climb. There are more than 360 Oreums throughout the island and they create the peaceful landscape that is typical for Jeju.
Artist Statement
The core of my inspiration always relies on perhaps the most mundane faces of natural scenery. Various faces of nature in the past, that remain deep within my memory, are meld with my present self to reenact the spaces that I portray in my works.
I aimed to materialize my sacred inner spaces using the vibrant and reflective vitality of nature. Each meditative brushstroke assembles to form trees, forests, fields, and mountains to manifest as another life form. These forms then slowly reveal their innate faces as I add palettes of color on top.
Vast fields thick with weeds and snags show their amber blushes, sparse bald spots of snow among a dense coniferous mountainside vibrate with a whiter shade of pale, and dewy grasslands basking under the sun resonate their vibrant green. In such ways, the faces and colors of nature are always recreated and reformed into new worlds under my concurrent emotions. Inside this world, I capture the sacred moments from this majestically tranquil yet ever-changing forms of nature.
