Description: When I captured “Just One Look Back” in 2017, its reference to the changing political landscape was palpable. Head coverings in the Muslim world are an expression of modesty and faith. Unfortunately, women were being unfairly judged for wearing the hijab by those who were unwilling to take even a moment to learn about the human behind the veil. The Silk series was borne out of a desire to encourage the viewer to see beyond the scarf and to challenge preconceived perceptions of the women who choose to wear a head covering. The portraits were made to spark the viewer’s desire to peer beneath the surface and ask the deeper questions about the individual’s identity: what makes them simultaneously fragile and strong, what inspires them and from where their faith comes. Finding shared connections through careful insight can hopefully bring people from diverse backgrounds to exist together more harmoniously.
