Artist statement
This represents another piece that I lived with for a while and liked less and less over time. It title was Escher Staircase... inspired by M.C. Escher's fantastic drawings. I had created an upside down actual staircase. There were few actual changes that were physically feasible but making the steps into half ovals seemed to make sense. Also, creating a flat transition from one element to the next thereby created a stop and go end and beginning all at once. The piece works spectacularly well now. The sense or upward movement shifted from a staircase to a lifting movement. That movement powered by hydraulics. Hydraulics comes with a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.
