Artist statement
I usually choose a set of limitations and work on a series of variations. After experimenting with different inks and papers I settled on ink and mulberry paper for this series. I work spontaneously with restraint. By diluting the ink somewhat randomly, I do not know exactly how transparent it will be until it dries. The obstacles, awkwardnesses, surprises, and adaptations reflect the passage of the period of time I work on each series. I look for a sense of spaciousness, energetic stillness, radiance, balance, luminosity, liveliness, presence. Each piece documents a moment in time, an intuition toward some sort of harmonious unknown, the integration of impulses, territory as yet unexplored.
