I believe in tight engagement with materials to ‘get into things’, to study phenomena from the inside-out. I perceive visuality and materiality to be interwoven, and markings and imprints as indexes that reveal their immaterial complexities.
I explore nature materially and conceptually, making my work process-centric and intuitive. In my ink painting, I exploit the material flatness of paper and water-based mediums to explore boundaries and forms. I created the 'pooling' approach to simulate the natural phenomena of water puddles found on wet forest floor, believing that they are never static and are instead dynamic as they move across surfaces over time, simply ‘doing their own thing’.
Using ‘distance’ as a methodological lens to examine identity and place, I am currently working on a body of works with themes revolving ideas of 'Third Space' and 'Rememorying'. Here, landscape, people, and culture become conduits that link personal and collective experience. Through material and embodied aesthetics, this body of work takes varied and fragmented forms, consisting of works on paper, text, performance, installations, photography, and videos. Gathering imageries from my immediate environment in the UK and Singapore, I reconfigure, reconceptualise, and reinterpret elements to explore alternative ways of considering them.
