About the art
Artist statement
Jesudara's artistic practice is deeply rooted in exploring the stories, connections, and relationships between people, their environments, and nature. Through her work, she delves into the intricate bonds between plants, natural fibers, and their historical and cultural significance, examining how these elements resonate with contemporary life. Initially conveyed through drawings and gouache paintings, Jesudara’s artistic journey evolved as she began to incorporate material exploration, which led her to embrace textiles as a means of expression.
Her creative process is fueled by experimentation with diverse materials and techniques, enabling her to bridge the past and present with a heightened sensitivity to the environment. Jesudara's studies and experiences continuously shape her evolving approach to art, allowing her to uncover and tell stories that highlight the transformative power of narratives in everyday life.
Currently, she is focused on examining the connections between natural fibers, their history, and their end-use, with particular attention to Nigeria's rich textile traditions, including cloth weaving and print design. By integrating textile elements into her paintings and employing painterly techniques within textiles, Jesudara weaves together the complexities of human existence and our interaction with nature. These reimagined narratives often take form in wearable art, linking the stories intimately to the body and daily life. Through this approach, she invites a deeper, more personal understanding of the emotions embedded in the stories she tells, making them vivid and profoundly different from the familiar ways we encounter them in the world.
