About the art
Artist statement
Joyce Steinfeld has taken each letter in the Hebrew Alphabet and have drawn it in her own style, making her own typestyle for the Hebrew Alphabet. Each letter also has symbolic meanings associated with it. This sculpture is about the letter Bet.
Bet is the second letter in the Hebrew Alphabet. The Torah begins with a word that starts with a Bet and reads “In the beginning”. For Kabbalists, it is the primal energy of creation from which everything is born and nourished. It is being ready to act. It represents a house or home. It is the place that one has the feeling of belonging, and from here you can become the person you are emotionally and spiritually meant to be. It represents the number two and the duality that we observe with our senses, like good and bad, full and empty, spiritual and mundane.
