Artist statement
The starting off point of this work began with another painting, Terminus. As I studied that painting the notion of oddly geometric buildings and of negative and positive space became the jumping off point. Using a T square and 30/60 and 45/90 degree architect triangles, I started mapping out in pencil rectangular shaped "buildings" affixed to one another. I then erased certain lines, leaving a mere hint of the geometry and using masking tape to delineate the outlines filling in the voids in green and orange acrylic paint. What remained was a very minimalist illusion of space and of the unseen geometry.
After looking at this for awhile I felt that the space needed to be "activated" and started thinking along the lines of other unseen modes of our industrial landscape. Tunnels, highways, roads, silos, maps, circuit boards all came to mind and as usual my instincts took over and the marks manifested themselves in an automatic manner. The resulting image seemed both strange and scientific and perhaps futurist. Hence the titled.
