About the art
Artist statement
“Poji Jala (Grandfather in Yala)” testifies to Nibuesa’s attentiveness to the details of daily life that inscribe Pattani’s multiculturalism. It portrays an old man sitting comfortably, cross-legged, in a grocery store. His relaxed posture and gaze away from the viewer prompt the audience to ponder what he may be observing or contemplating. The store has several plastic baskets, stacked on top of each other and bearing the names of the merchants. These names reflect the diverse identities of people residing together in the three southern border provinces of Thailand. The artwork captures the essence of harmonious coexistence among individuals from various races and beliefs, symbolizing the unity within diversity in the region.
