About the art
Artist statement
Kyong Lee's series combines colour and language to visually represent the external environment. The process involves mixing two or three colors on the canvas, starting from one end and gradually transitioning into a different color through horizontal color fields. These fields start at a minimum size of 5 mm and incrementally increase by 1 mm. Lee personally handwrote the names of the colors on the side of the canvas.
Inspired by Umberto Boccioni's States of Mind Series, which portrays the intricate emotions experienced in a bustling train station during the futurist movement, Kyong Lee's work strives to instill a sense of tranquility amid the overwhelming tumult of emotions. Through the deliberate arrangement of horizontal color fields and the gradual progression from one emotion to another, Lee seeks to illustrate the organic process of changing one's state of mind.
