About PLASTIC RORSCHACH Series
…the photographic works, Plastic Rorschach (2014), the common plastic bag is transformed into various forms, based on the well-known projective personality assessment test called the Rorschach test. The test, developed by the Swiss-born psychiatrist Herman Rorschach in 1921, asks test subjects to interpret ten symmetrical ink blot images. The images do not represent a fixed object and therefore are used as a tool to extract psychological conventions and ideas of those interpreting the images. From the ink blot images of the Rorschach test that prods people to conjure up different things, what the artist hones in on is actually their symmetry. Because human beings are built symmetrically, we are innately accustomed to symmetrical images. So even if an image is conceptual, if it is symmetrical in shape we tend to look for and see things familiar to us. Similarly in Plastic Rorschach, viewers will not stop at defining what is actually photographed, but will find themselves going further to define what they see in each symmetrical plastic image. The images of Plastic Rorschach are perceived using the conventional ideas and imaginations of viewers, resulting in an unlimited number of perspectives.
