About the art
Artist statement
This is an abstract expressionist oil painting in a style I call "evocative abstract". A sense of quiet clarity is built up through mark making and the finessed colour palette - in combination with charcoal, oil sticks and graphite. There is a transparency to my oil painting that is usually associated with aquarel. And I've used impasto and sand to give extra plasticity and dimension to the work.
In my current work, I am drawing on themes such as silence and the “poetry of just being” (inspired by the likes of Pessoa and Pasternak). In particular, I try to transform ideas into emotion, to be expressed by texture and rhythm. Though purely abstract, I want the painting to evoke feelings, memories and images - stimulating their recall to the conscious mind.
