Artist statement
Fading Flag is an original 40 x 30-inch acrylic painting by California artist Marlene Struss. The style is biomorphic abstract expressionism with Asian influences. The panel is cradled in wood varnished to complement the painting, signed by Marlene Struss, protected with satin-gloss polymer varnish, wired and ready to hang in your home or office. The title refers to the flag-like red, white, and blue mountaintops seen from an aerial view. The skyblue background serves as the abstraction of either sky, water, or geologic erosion causing the gradual disappearance of those mountains. The image parallels the gradual erosion of our democracy, civility, and culture.
