SOLSTICE
Gold has been present in the works of Martin Ecker for years. It invites the viewer to look beyond the surface of the picture. In Martin Ecker's artworks, gold is usually alienated. Besides sometimes real gold paper, sometimes copper, sometimes imitation gold is depicted. Oxidation and scratches enliven the surface, again and again the surface is broken up, sometimes with indentations in the canvas, it fills the surroundings with light, sometimes it reflects, like an open mirror. For Ecker, working with gold means coagulated trust or, if you like, coagulated mistrust of all other value promises. Wherever mistrust arises, the significance of gold increases, and wherever trust prevails, the significance of gold stagnates. But the breathtaking brilliance of this highest form of matter is more than just valuable, it is light, consoler and fulfilment in the material as well as the spiritual.
