About the art
Artist statement
With a colour palette of oranges, blues, yellow and red, Young Vic Series: No 4 is a bold, graphic and geometric print and one in a series of four unique artworks, inspired by the architecture and interior spaces of the Young Vic Theatre in London. Strong angular geometric shapes combine with architectural details and imagery of the empty seating area in the foyer, the quiet before the theatre goers arrive.
This series of four artworks were originally shown as part of an exhibition at the National Theatre in London and were one of thirty artworks included in a book by Buro Four for the Thirty for Thirty project. The project celebrated thirty years of their architectural practise and artists were selected to respond to one of the architectural projects the practise had worked on over the years.
This artwork was also in the exhibition, Making in Colour at Ruthin Craft Centre in Wales, UK and has been exhibited at Contemporary Applied Arts in London and Gallery Handwerk in Munich as part of a group show titled, International Textile Printing.
Hand-printed by Michelle, with dyes and pigments on cotton and Tudor cotton/linen mix in two sections, which have then been carefully joined together by stitching. This one-off artwork is stretched over a wooden frame.
